    The Swinburne University of Technology has been authorised to develop a timely recognition system to trace the sources of particular bacteria’s which contribute to Gastroenteritis, the familiar food borne illness within Australia by The Victorian Department of Health.

    A private company founded by Professors in Texas Tech University in Lubbock have developed the technology to extend the shelf life of bread for up to 60 days without it moulding.  It works by using microwave pulse frequencies from multiple sources to pasteurise food.

    Over the past 20 years food poisoning has more than doubled. The experts believe that people are washing their meat prior to cooking. Campylobacter poisoning notifications have increased from 8782 in 1991 to 17, 717 for 2011.

  • Listeria Poisoning Kills four and hospitalises another 19

    Listeria poisoning in a ricotta cheese product has caused the death of four people in the US and hospitalised another 19 people causing the product to be recalled.

    The Marte Ricotta Frescolina and Ricotta Salata Soft Italian cheese varieties are made by US company Forever Cheese and is imported and sold in Australia.

  • Gold Coast Gamblers are 'Biggest Losers'

    Gambling losses on the Gold Coast is steadily increasing, with new figures showing that Gold Coasters are losing up to $750,000 a day on poker machines.

    Emma Malone, a Gambling Help services educator for the Queensland Government, said that there is a ‘hidden epidemic’ of gambling on the Coast and that a second casino would  be dangerous.

  • Listeria Found at Brisbane Airport Catering Company

    Dangerous bacteria was found on the kitchen equipment of an international catering company at Brisbane Airport, forcing it to close. The catering company provides thousand of in-flight meals.

    Alpha Catering’s kitchen was immediately closed by Queensland Health & Brisbane City Council after Listeria was found in their kitchen.

  • Excessive Noise violation attracts fine for North Brisbane Hotel

    A North Brisbane Hotel has been successfully prosecuted by The Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) as they exceeded noise limits during a Good Charlotte concert in November last year.

    The noise beach occurred on 12th November 2011 when OLGR investigators measured consistently higher levels of music than what is directed on the licence document.

  • QLD OLGR Increase penalty unit to $110

    Queensland Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) have increased the value of a penalty unit, effective from 21st August 2012.

    The penalty unit has increased 10%, from $100 to $110 per unit.

  • Vaccine Close for Food Poisoning Bug

    A vaccine that protects people from the bacteria that poisons people through contaminated chicken is being researched and developed on the Gold Coast by Griffith University's Institute of Glycomics researchers.

    According to the World Health Organisation statistics, if the vaccine in successful, it would help an estimate 10% of the worlds population each year.
