More than a third of the residents of Arcare St James at Helensvale have been struck down with the gastro bug in the past week.
Karen Carey, Arcare state operations manager, confirmed that staff have been forced to stop working from the St James facility where possible in order to try and stop the outbreak.
While friends and family have not been prevented from visiting residents it has been recommended that they don't.
The gastro outbreak was affecting other aged care facilities around the Gold Coast as well according to reports from nurses. Ms Carey said that, "nursing staff are pretty thin on the ground on the Gold Coast at the moment."
Gastroenteritis is triggered by infection (viral, bacterial, parasitic) and causes inflammation of the digestive system causing diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal cramps. The young and old, sick people and pregnant women are highly susceptible to gastro and can even die from it in the most serious of cases.
It is vital to remember that the main complication of gastro is dehydration so it is imperative to ensure that any sufferers are kept hydrated at all times.
