Listeria Poisoning Kills four and hospitalises another 19

Listeria poisoning in a ricotta cheese product has caused the death of four people in the US and hospitalised another 19 people causing the product to be recalled.

The Marte Ricotta Frescolina and Ricotta Salata Soft Italian cheese varieties are made by US company Forever Cheese and is imported and sold in Australia.

Further deaths from the Listeria poisoning are expected as poisoning can occur anywhere up to two months after consumption.

The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a statement warning that Listeria poisoning can result in fatal poisonings such as Menangitis and Septicemia and they stress that the most as risk include pregnant women, older adults and people with a low or weakened immune system.
