The temporary shutdown of Southbank restaurant and bar has been ordered by the CEO of Melbourne City due to its appalling conditions which had led to an infestation of cockroaches.
Sole Director of Southbank Three Pty Ltd, Fadi Sarkis, was the proprietor of this restaurant when complaints by two individuals were made in March last year leading to a number of violations including accumulated food wastes, dirt and other matter and the “harbourage of pests” such as dead and live cockroaches.
Amongst many other things, Sarkis and the company had failed to ensure that the food contact surfaces were in a clean and sanitary condition and had not stored food to protect it form likely contamination.
An inspection conducted in May found no cockroaches and therefore the closure was revoked.
However, Sarkis and the company were each convicted and fined $45,000 and each was ordered to pay $2700 costs.
