Reinforcing the importance of Responsible Service of Alcohol - Police probe bars after drinking session ends in sailor's death

Marina Mirage bars are to be investigated for irresponsible liquor service after a French sailor drowned on Sunday following a boozey lunch.

The body of the 45 year old was found at about 11:15am yesterday. He had tripped on a thong and fallen into the water at Mariner's Cove marina, Main Beach.

Surfers Paradise police and water police search for hours around the main arm of the marina before the Queensland police dive unit found his body within minutes of entering the water.

The man was first mate on a 30m commercial yacht bound for Noumea, New Caledonia. Gold Coast water police Acting Senior Sergeant Tony Nelson said the yacht arrived at the Coast on Sunday from Fremantle, Western Australia.

Witness Deanne Stubbs called the police about 8pm on Sunday when her partner saw the man fall into the water.
