Victorian cafe ordered to close due to insect contamination

Manningham health inspectors have ordered the immediate closure of the Yarra Organics cafe located at Templestowe after being alerted by a customer who complained about insect contamination in their food.

Upon further investigation the council discovered that the business was in breach of multiple food safety standards, including selling food that had been made by unregistered businesses.

Council CEO Joe Carbone said that, "Officers believed that the premises was placing public health and safety at risk and they served an order under the provisions of the Food Act to close the premises temporarily. Extensive works are needed to achieve compliance, and there are multiple points for pest entry and large spider webs indicating a significant insect problem."

Yarra Organics Cafe has been run by the same family for the past 15 years and they contended that the closure had "hurt the business' reputation. None of the food sold at the cafe was prepared onsite.
